Invokana Attorney

Foley and Small is accepting and litigating cases on behalf of clients who have suffered injuries
as a result of the use of the drug Invokana.

The Invokana litigation involves allegations that Invokana causes diabetic ketoacidosis and
other acute kidney damage, which can lead to death as well as leg and foot amputations. It is
alleged that defendant Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which developed and manufactured the
drug, failed to adequately test the drug and warn of its risks.
Invokana went on sale in 2013 to treat Type 2 diabetes by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption
with the goal of lowering blood glucose. Canagliflozin is a member of the gliflozin

The Big Picture

Understanding the SGLT2 Inhibitors’ Diabetic Ketoacidosis Risk: Diabetic ketoacidosis
(DKA) is a serious condition in which the blood has too much acid, causing a malfunction
in bodily systems. DKA is serious and can be fatal. Since it is typically not common in
Type 2 diabetic, DKA can be doubly dangerous when it hits unexpectedly.

“In May 2015, the FDA issued a warning about the risk of developing diabetic
ketoacidosis while using SGLT2 inhibitors. That December, the FDA updated the drugs’
labels to include warnings about developing ketoacidosis even with near-normal blood
glucose levels.” Reported in Pharmacy Times-Invokana Ketoacidosis Risk.

FDA Issues Warning for Type 2 Diabetes Drugs: SGLT2 inhibitors linked to potentially
fatal condition called keto acidosis:

A certain class of Type 2 diabetes drugs can lead to a life-threatening condition called
ketoacidosis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns. These prescription drugs are
called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and include canaliflozin,
dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin. They work by prompting the kidneys to remove sugar in
the blood through urine.

The Numbers

  • According to a U.S. News & World Health Report, 1 in 8 Americans has Type 2 diabetes.
  • Invokana is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used to treat Type 2
diabetes. According to the drug makers’ website, 7 million people have been prescribed
    Invokana.
  • As of January 2018, more than 1,100 Invokana lawsuits have been filed against the drug
maker Johnson & Johnson and more are expected. After issuing a warning in May 2015
linking Invokana to ketoacidosis (DKA), the FDA mandated a new black box warning to
the drug in May of 2017 (but not all SGLT2 inhibitors) alerting patients of the risk of leg
    and foot amputation

Foley and Small is accepting Invokana cases resulting in:

  • Diabetic aikido acidosis
  • Kidney damage
  • Amputations to a foot or leg
